Rocks within the pegmatites are primarily plagioclase feldspars (oligoclase and albite), potash feldspars (perthite and microcline), and quartz. Spodumene, lepidolite, muscovite, and tourmaline are major constituents in a few pegmatites (Page, 1953 & DeWitt, 1986).
The pegmatite mineralogy is usually very simple: feldspar and (ferro)hornblende. Quartz occurs in very large, but completely anhedral, milky concentrations. Other minerals encountered are large books of biotite, badly weathered apatite, totally altered garnets, and ilmenite (near the magnetite veins).
Jul 23, 2017· A granite pegmatite specimen. This specimen of a granite with pegmatitic texture displays a large beryl crystal to one side. Also expressed are large quartz, biotite mica and feldspar crystals that make up the majority of the rock. No collection locality
Pegmatites are located all over the world and have have produced not only ore minerals but scientifically important rare mineral species. We will take a look at these minerals, mostly rare species, as well as introduce you to the many complexities of these interesting geological deposits.
The Platt pegmatite was mined for U and REE's from ~1958-1965 by Ralph Platt and a few others. This is the calcium-rich "cheralite" variety of monazite (I don't believe it is Ca-rich enough to actually qualify as the species cheralite-(Ce) however).

The south pegmatite is exposed for 160 feet and varies in width between 4 and 9 feet. Quarrying occurred on the eastern flank of the pegmatite resulting in an 80 foot long cut (fig. 19). The pegmatite consists of smoky quartz, perthite, massive plagioclase, cleavelandite, garnet, beryl and traces of lepidolite and columbite-tantalite.
Pegmatite is a very coarse-grained igneous rock. Simple pegmatites are composed of large crystals of ordinary minerals. Here is a sample of alkali feldspar granite pegmatite from Northern Norway which is composed of alkali feldspar (pink), quartz (gray) and biotite (black). Width of view 50 cm.

Great crystal of twin color Tourmaline (Elbaite) which stands upright on the lightly smoky Quartz. As often happens with pegmatite minerals, the bottom of the Elbaite and Quartz shows a natural fracture that was then healed. So while one cannot call it doubly terminated it is not broken either. Great esthetics.
